Alchemical Wizard 48 : Bee Pollen & The Architects of Life!
In the breathtaking interconnected tapestry of nature, bees are more than just buzzing insects, they are architects of life, weaving together ecosystems through pollination, electrical communication, and perhaps even levitation. Their plight, marked by habitat loss, colony collapse, pesticide exposure and wireless communication technologies underlines and greatly emphasizes our interlinked world and as a treatise to a dis-harmonized planet!
From the smallest acts of planting a pollinator friendly garden to advocating for responsible land management, we each have a role to play in safeguarding these extraordinary creatures. Let us cogitate their bombilate call by becoming stewards of their well-being and ensuring that the buzz of bees continues to resonate through our intermittent geopolitical turmoil timeline for future generations!
Bees are one of the most efficient and prevalent pollinators. They have a symbiotic relationship with flowers and other plants, meaning that both the plant and bee benefit from their interaction. The bees pollinate the plants, spreading the pollen, which they catch on their tiny hairs, from flower to flower, therefore helping the plants reproduce. In exchange, the bees also eat the pollen, which is a critical component of their diets.
The evolution of many flowers has largely been tailored around increasing their attractiveness to bees, favoring flowers who are in the color spectrum that bees can see, ultraviolet rather than red-hued, and that release a strong, sweet smell when their pollen is ready to take. But bees pollinate more than just flowers. Many of our favorite fruits and vegetables require the help of bees to pollinate them. From tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and eggplants to nuts, seeds and even cotton!
It is estimated that about 80% of pollination of flowering plants uses the help of pollinators like bees to reproduce. Bees are critical for the stability of our food systems, supporting over 35% of global agricultural land which is why their decline of over 60% is so devastating!
Many of us have been made aware of how populations of bees have been declining around the world. However, a 2025 report from Project Apis m. paints a dark picture of when it comes to the future of the honeybee. After so many beekeepers reported a stark decline in their numbers over the years and has left many of them scrambling to figure out what is going on with their colonies.
Entomologists are currently studying the reasons behind the high rate of bee die-off happening worldwide. Beekeepers across the United States lost 48.2% of their managed honeybee colonies from April 2022 to April 2023, according to preliminary results of the 17th annual nationwide survey conducted by the nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. Although the total number of honeybee colonies in the country has remained relatively stable over the last 20 years (~2.6 million colonies according to the USDA NASS Honey Reports), loss rates remain high, indicating that beekeepers are under substantial pressure to recover from losses by creating new colonies every year!
A new report confirms that electromagnetic radiation from power lines, cell towers, and wireless technology can disorientate birds and insects, and alter bee behavior and physiology. The ultra-high-frequency (microwave) radiation of 5G networks has been shown to negatively impact birds, bees, and wildlife. Bee populations are decreasing worldwide, and the radiation from cell phones can also affect honeybees. A study led by researcher Daniel Favre found that bees reacted significantly to cell phones placed near or in hives in call making mode. The bees sensed the signals, and the radiation from these towers interfered with bees’ navigation systems.
Favre, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, suggested that phone signals may confuse honeybees so much that they become fatally disoriented. The study found that the phones in the hives did not kill the bees, but rather irritated them, making “worker piping” noises. The team found that honeybees made 10 times the amount of noise when a cell phone made or received a call than they did when the phone was shut off.
Bees and flowers share an extraordinary relationship beyond the visible exchange of nectar and pollen. One fascinating aspect of their interaction involves the electromagnetic fields generated by plants and detected by bees.
Flowers naturally emit a weak negative electrical charge, while bees accumulate a positive charge as they fly due to friction with the air. When a bee approaches a flower, the difference in electrical charges creates an electrostatic interaction, which helps transfer pollen from the flower to the bee.
Additionally, this charge alters the flower’s electrical field, signaling to other bees that it has already been visited. This mechanism allows bees to optimize their foraging by avoiding flowers with diminished nectar supplies, ensuring efficient pollination and energy use.
The flowers themselves also play a role in this dynamic communication. Research suggests that flowers can detect bees' electrical signals and may even use these cues to adjust their nectar production!
In the morphogenetic fields symbiosis interlocks the silent architects of life giving us this disciplined dance, that nurtures a gloriously bountiful planet! Are we truly being stewards of a well-deserved planet? Are we learning from Biomimicry?
Okay, now that we have planted bee-friendly flowers in and around our gardens such as lavender, sunflowers, clover, rosemary, and native wildflowers to provide the much-needed nectar and pollen throughout the year, and we have become Beekeepers, let’s talk about Bee Pollen and its medicinal properties.
This nutrient rich compound is considered one of nature’s most potent superfoods for humans as well as the hive. Bee pollen contains a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, phytochemicals, and contains various beneficial bacteria and fungi, that provide numerous health benefits!
Honeybees also collect pollen in a pollen basket located on their hind legs. Back in the hive, other worker bees deposit it in brood cells to feed honeybee larvae and workers. A gathered product, not a secretion like other bee products such as royal jelly, propolis, or beeswax, is a superfood that benefits the hive.
Some of the most well-known potential benefits of bee pollen include its ability to support cognitive health, weight management, and appetite suppression through its high concentrations of lecithin! Studies have found that bee pollen has immunostimulant properties, which may help boost our immune systems by stimulating white blood cells to produce more antibodies to fight bacterial infections and dis-eases.
Its high concentrations of Vitamin C can help ward off bacterial colds or other toxin cleansings more effectively than over-the-counter options such as cough medicines or decongestants. Bee pollen can help fight oxidative damage in the body and boost overall immunity. It has also been shown to help reduce inflammation and increase energy levels due to its high B-vitamin content.
Bee pollen contains enzymes that can be used to aid in digestion. These enzymes can help break down food, so it is easier for our bodies to absorb essential nutrients. Furthermore, bee pollen may also help balance hormones and even reduce stress levels within the body! What?! In another study conducted by the American Diabetes Association found that taking a daily dose of bee pollen significantly reduced blood sugar levels in both diabetic and non-diabetic volunteers!
The anti-inflammatory properties of bee pollen may help treat a range of skin issues, including dryness or itchiness associated with eczema or psoriasis. Additionally, research suggests that bee pollen may enhance skin health by helping protect cells against environmental stresses. The benefits are too numerous to count!
I use a little bit of local Bee Pollen every day in the springtime to help my biological body adapt to all the pollen in the air. Allergies stemming from the Cotton Woods here in Southern Oregon have been extremely potent in recent years!
Bee pollen is an effective therapy to help desensitize the body to pollen and reduce symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as seasonal allergy. Bee pollen consumption can help condition the immune system to small concentrations of potential allergens, which may build up tolerance to various allergy triggers. This has been confirmed by evidence published in Phytotherapy Research reporting that gradual bee pollen exposure over time reduced the histamine response in mast cells, which triggers common allergy symptoms, including sneezing and sinus congestion.
Also, according to research published in Nutrients, certain bee pollen extracts were effective against potentially harmful bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas, as well as fungi such as Candida, a common yeast infection. This highlights bee pollen's ability to provide a broad-spectrum defense against various pathogens, improve immunity, and help maintain the balance of the gut microbiome by restricting the overgrowth of potentially harmful microbes! Yes, that’s right the gut microbiome again.
In closing, please always consider… “Out of the ground, off the vine, off the tree! Food is Medicine. Get your vitamins and supplementations from whole foods if you can!” Most vitamin and health supplement brands are owned by pharmaceutical companies, if not, the labs that synthesize the chemical compounds are!
